Qatar’s population is shaped by labour migration, a large working-age majority, a pronounced male surplus and near-total urban residence. Population totals can change rapidly when employment-linked arrivals and departures shift.

Core Demographic Indicators
Migration Shapes the Population Count and Sex Balance
Qatar’s resident population does not follow a demographic path based only on births, deaths and gradual ageing. Employment-linked migration adds or removes large groups of working-age adults, producing rapid changes in the total population and a persistent male majority.
The International Labour Organization reports that migrants accounted for 94% of Qatar’s labour force in 2023. This labour-market measure is not the same as the foreign-born share of the total population, but it explains why employment conditions are closely associated with population movement.

How Migration Changes the Total
- The modelled population rose from 644,989 in 2000 to 2,972,215 in 2025.
- The male share reached 75.5% in 2010 and remained 71.1% in 2025.
- The 2021 decline of 10.9% and the 2024 increase of 7.3% are too large to interpret through natural change alone.
- The male-to-female ratio fell from 307.5 in 2010 to 245.9 in 2025 but remained far above demographic parity.

The Working-Age Population Dominates the Age Structure
Qatar’s age distribution is centred on adults aged 15–64. In 2025, this group represented 83.3% of the modelled population. Children accounted for 15.0%, while people aged 65 and over accounted for 1.7%.
The low older-age share should not be read as a direct measure of longevity. A migration system dominated by employment-age residents can keep the national age profile young even when life expectancy is high.

What the Broad Age Groups Show
- The child share fell from 44.2% in 1960 to 13.9% in 2010 before moving back to 15.0% in 2025.
- The working-age share reached 85.2% in 2010, when the male-to-female imbalance was also at its widest among the selected years.
- The 65+ share rose from 0.9% in 2010 to 1.7% in 2025, but remained small in the total resident structure.

Fertility Fell While Population Growth Continued
Qatar’s total fertility rate declined from 6.53 births per woman in 1960 to 1.72 in 2024. The population nevertheless expanded over the same period because fertility is only one component of change in a migration-dependent population.
The 2024 fertility estimate was below the broad replacement-level benchmark of 2.1 births per woman. That benchmark is a general reference point and does not predict Qatar’s total population direction while migration remains large.

Urbanization Is Now Metropolitan Concentration
Qatar’s urban population share rose from 65.0% in 1960 to 99.4% in 2025. At this level, urbanization no longer mainly describes movement from rural settlements into cities. It describes where population growth is absorbed within the Doha metropolitan system and its surrounding municipalities.
The National Planning Council’s Census 2020 atlas separates population density, broad age groups, sex distribution, household residence and worker accommodation at municipality and zone level. These local patterns cannot be inferred from the national urban share alone.

Where Population Growth Is Concentrated
- The urban share passed 90% before 1990 and exceeded 98% by 2010.
- A national urban share of 99.4% does not mean that the population is evenly distributed across Qatar’s territory.
- Municipality and zone data are needed to distinguish central residential areas, newer planned districts, industrial zones and collective worker accommodation.
How Qatar’s Population Measures Should Be Read
Employment-linked migration can alter the resident count faster than births and deaths can alter it.
The total population combines Qatari citizens, expatriate families and contract-based migrant workers with different age, sex and residence patterns.
The low 65+ share partly reflects the concentration of migrants in employment ages and should not be treated as a measure of poor survival.
International mid-year estimates, national census counts and monthly resident totals can differ because they use different dates and production methods.

Data Sources and Methodology
The long population, sex, age, fertility, life expectancy and urbanization series use World Bank indicator files and their underlying UN datasets. Values are shown at the precision needed for interpretation; cards and narrative text are rounded, while tables preserve fuller values where useful.
Male share and males per 100 females are derived from the male, female and total population values for the same year. These calculations do not introduce an additional population source. The labour migration measure is presented separately because a share of the labour force is not equivalent to a share of the total resident population.

Methodological Safety Note: Qatar’s population can differ across official monthly releases, census counts and international mid-year estimates because each measure refers to a different date and production method. The 2025 population, age and sex values on this page are modelled mid-year estimates and should not be treated as an end-of-month resident register. The 94% migration figure describes the labour force, not the total population. Urban population follows the source dataset’s national classification, while the male-share and sex-ratio values are derived calculations.
Population Data Questions
Why do different sources report different populations for Qatar?
Monthly resident totals, census counts and modelled mid-year estimates refer to different dates and methods. Short-term worker arrivals and departures can also create large differences within the same year.
Does Qatar’s population growth come mainly from births?
No. Fertility was 1.72 births per woman in 2024, while migrants represented 94% of the labour force in 2023. Large annual population movements are closely associated with migration.
Why is Qatar’s male population much larger?
Employment-linked migration brings many working-age men into Qatar. The modelled 2025 population contained about 246 males for every 100 females.
Is Qatar’s low 65+ share evidence of low life expectancy?
No. The 65+ group represented 1.7% of the modelled population in 2025, while total life expectancy was 82.5 years in 2024. The age share is affected by the large concentration of employment-age migrants.
Does a 99% urban share mean everyone lives in central Doha?
No. The urban classification covers a wider settlement system. Municipality and zone statistics are needed to examine how residents are distributed across Doha, Al Rayyan, planned districts, industrial areas and other parts of the metropolitan region.
