Demographer.org is an independent demographic information website covering population size, population change, age structure, fertility, mortality, migration, urbanization and long-term demographic projections.
The site brings together demographic indicators from national statistical offices, international organizations, census publications and established public data systems. Each country profile identifies the year, territorial scope and source of the figures used wherever that information is available.
What Demographer.org publishes
Country profiles may include:
- Current and historical population estimates
- Annual population growth
- Age distribution and median age
- Total fertility rate
- Life expectancy at birth
- Birth and death indicators
- International migration
- Urban and rural population
- Population density
- Population projections
Not every indicator is available for every country or year. Missing figures are identified as unavailable rather than filled with unsupported estimates.
Observed data, estimates and projections
Demographic figures do not all represent the same type of measurement. A census count, a national population register, an intercensal estimate and a United Nations projection are different forms of evidence.
Country profiles distinguish among:
- Observed data: figures obtained from censuses, civil registration systems, surveys or administrative records.
- Official estimates: figures calculated by a national statistical authority for periods between censuses or after the latest census.
- International estimates: harmonized figures produced by organizations such as the United Nations or World Bank.
- Projections: future population scenarios based on assumptions about fertility, mortality and migration.
A projected value is not presented as an observed count. Estimates and projections may be revised when new census results or administrative data become available.
Source priorities
Sources are selected according to the indicator, country and period being examined. The usual order of preference is:
- National statistical offices and official census authorities
- Official population registers and government statistical publications
- United Nations demographic datasets
- World Bank, Eurostat, OECD and other established intergovernmental databases
- Peer-reviewed research and recognized demographic institutions
- Secondary data services when the original series is unavailable or difficult to reproduce
The most recent source is not automatically the most suitable source. A recent estimate may be less appropriate than a slightly older census figure when the purpose is to describe an observed population structure. The indicator year and source type are therefore shown separately.
Territorial definitions
Country totals can differ because sources may use different geographic definitions. A figure may cover the mainland, metropolitan territory, overseas territories, disputed areas, citizens, registered residents or the de facto population present on a particular date.
When territorial scope materially affects the result, the relevant definition is stated in the country profile. Figures using different geographic scopes should not be treated as directly interchangeable.
Independence
Demographer.org is not a national statistical office, government agency, census authority or intergovernmental organization. References to official institutions do not imply endorsement, partnership or affiliation.
Editorial decisions are based on relevance, source quality, comparability and clarity. A source does not receive favorable treatment because it is linked, cited or described on the site.
Limitations
Population statistics are revised regularly. Census undercounts, delayed registrations, survey uncertainty, migration measurement problems, boundary changes and differing definitions can produce legitimate differences between sources.
Demographer.org provides demographic information for general research and educational use. It should not replace an official statistical publication when a figure is required for legal, administrative, financial, medical or policy decisions.
