Demographer.org corrects confirmed factual, numerical, sourcing and presentation errors. Reports from readers, researchers and data providers are reviewed against the original source and the context in which the information appears.
What can be reported
Correction reports may concern:
- An incorrect population figure or demographic indicator
- A value assigned to the wrong country, territory or year
- An incorrect unit, percentage or decimal position
- A chart that does not match its table
- A broken, incomplete or misidentified source
- An incorrect territorial definition
- A census figure presented as an estimate or projection
- An estimate or projection presented as an observed count
- A misleading explanation of a demographic trend
- A page title, heading, description or image assigned to the wrong country
- A calculation error
How to submit a correction
Send correction reports to support@demographer.org.
A useful report includes:
- The full address of the affected page
- The section, table, chart or sentence containing the issue
- The value or statement believed to be incorrect
- The proposed correction
- A link or full reference to a reliable supporting source
- The relevant reference year and territorial scope
Reports that contain only a replacement figure without its source may not provide enough information for verification.
Review process
A reported issue is checked against the source cited on the page and against relevant official data where available. The review may also examine reference dates, geographic scope, definitions, revisions and whether two sources are measuring different populations.
A difference between two sources is not automatically an error. Both figures may be valid when they use different dates, methods or territorial definitions. In such cases, the page may be clarified rather than replacing one figure with another.
Material corrections
A material correction changes the meaning or reliability of a page. Examples include:
- Replacing data belonging to the wrong country
- Correcting a major population total
- Changing the reference year of an indicator
- Correcting a mislabeled observed value, estimate or projection
- Replacing a source that does not support the published claim
- Correcting an explanation that reverses the direction of a trend
Material corrections should include a visible note describing the affected information, the corrected information and the correction date.
Minor corrections
Spelling, punctuation, formatting, accessibility labels and other changes that do not alter the meaning of the content may be corrected without a public correction note.
Page updates
Replacing an older indicator with a newly published official figure is an update rather than a correction when the previous figure was accurate for its stated year.
The data year must remain visible so that a new figure is not confused with a revision to an earlier period.
Source revisions
Statistical agencies sometimes revise historical series. When Demographer.org adopts a revised official series, earlier values on the site may change even though the original publication was transcribed correctly.
Substantial revisions should be explained in the source or methodology section of the affected page.
No removal in exchange for payment
Accurate demographic information is not removed, altered or given favorable treatment in exchange for payment, promotion, links or other benefits.
