Demographer.org aims to make demographic information usable across different devices, browsers and assistive technologies.

Accessibility approach

The site’s content and interface should support:

  • Keyboard navigation
  • Screen readers and other assistive technologies
  • Text resizing and browser zoom
  • Clear heading structure
  • Readable contrast
  • Descriptive link text
  • Accessible tables
  • Text alternatives for meaningful images
  • Reduced reliance on color alone

Charts and demographic data

Important chart values should also be available in readable HTML tables. A visitor should not need to hover over a chart, use a pointing device or run JavaScript to access essential demographic figures.

Charts should include a descriptive title, units, reference years and enough context to understand what is being measured.

Tables

Data tables should use column and row headings that identify the country, indicator, year and unit. Search fields and controls should include labels describing the table they affect.

On smaller screens, table presentation may change, but the relationship between each label and value should remain understandable.

Images

Images that communicate information should include concise alternative text. Decorative images should use an empty alternative text value so that they do not create unnecessary screen-reader output.

Navigation

The website should provide a consistent route to country profiles, methodology, sources, correction information and contact details.

Desktop and mobile navigation should not create duplicate menu announcements, repeated controls or conflicting element identifiers.

Known limitations

Some older pages, charts or third-party components may not yet meet every accessibility objective. External websites linked as data sources are controlled by their respective publishers and may follow different accessibility standards.

Reporting an accessibility problem

Accessibility problems can be reported to support@demographer.org.

A useful report includes:

  • The page address
  • The affected heading, table, chart, link or control
  • The device and browser used
  • The assistive technology used, when relevant
  • A short description of the expected result

Accessibility reports are reviewed alongside technical and editorial corrections.
